Feedback on RTW's current state and the implications and on uploading in general.
I first want to stress that I give my own opinion on the following topics.
Dear Rome Total War players,
I would like to discuss the recent changes in RTW and their implications. This article will include general thoughts on RTW as it stands now.
The purpose is to provide a base for further discussion.
1. Decline of players
Everyone has noticed this. It is not illogically for older games to see their player number melt like snow beneath the sun. Yet people still play Praetorians on gameranger which is older then RTW...
What can we do?
Videos, screenshots and clans can attract new players and make previous players return.
However, there are some improvements to be made:
- Clans sometimes declare wars, this is no issue. However, staying polite and knowing certain limits would greatly improve the RTW lobby. Consequent bullying behaviour should not be tolerated. Clans/players should try to remain civilised.
- Banning active players is not a good option. When being impolite, I suggest ignoring their words.
- Don't be overly competitive. Nobody likes to be told that you can't play any games against half of the lobby because you might lose which would mean that a screenshot or a video is posted against you. Everyone has lost games before.
- Many different playgrounds are currently used. We should all play on the same server to ensure that an active lobby is maintained instead of spreading out. I suggest the RTW lobby or gameranger (thanks to dionysos for notice).
(For people with a downloaded game... Well I, read my CD-rom driver, destroyed my original CD so I had to use a free download. I do still use my old key, but everyone knows how easy keys are obtained... Further discussion or questions are not allowed on this topic.)
2. Critiscism concerning screenshots, video's
- No hate commentaries. A bad example:
I took my own example so no-one else feels offended, I don't mind agreeing that I occasionally get defeated (badly in this case). Don't be that guy that spreads word of his (clan's) victories like the plague, but who cannot simply congratulate the winner if losing.
A civilised commentary would highlight errors and strengths without insulting and unbiased.
Don't draw conclusions about a player when only given 2-3 samples.
- RTW players should know that most video's/screenshots only show winning battles that are actually uploaded. On youtube I can make people believe that I'm Zeus (Juppiter for Romans) by selective uploading accompanied with biassed comments. Moreover, faking cannot be ruled out. Know who you can trust.
- Therefore I think it's crucial that tournament are commented and uploaded by 'peer-reviewed' channels. For example, TW TV is dependent on the critics of the forum crowd. All forum members are responsible to provide criticism when needed.
- Screenshot threads, video's should be accompanied in your head with the following thought. It's a quote I always use when uploading screenshot's: Only victories have been uploaded, not defeats though I've had many.
3. Policy towards new and regular players
Play against everyone who doesn't ruins a clan game. We need these people.
If a rare newer RTW player wishes to learn, be friendly and provide tips. I understand that you'd rather not play against 'noobs' but when you are sitting in the lobby, you can always be kind to people wishing to learn how to play.
Some people differ in personality and age and this can show itself in their gameplay. If that clan/player isn't your cup of tea then don't insult them and don't join their game.
The bottom line:
BE TOLERANT AND FRIENDLY. THINK CRITICALLY CONCERNING VID'S, SCREENS AND PLAYERS IN GENERAL.
